Ingredients

  • 2 cups of fresh coconut meat (from about 1 mature coconut) or unsweetened shredded coconut.
  • 4 cups of warm water.
  • Optional: A pinch of salt or sweetener like honey or sugar (if using for desserts).

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Coconut

  • If using a fresh coconut, crack it open and remove the coconut meat using a spoon or knife. Peel off the brown skin if desired.
  • If using shredded coconut, ensure it’s unsweetened for best results.

Step 2: Blend the Coconut

  • Add the coconut meat or shredded coconut to a blender.
  • Pour in warm water. Warm water helps extract the coconut’s natural fats and flavors more effectively.
  • Blend on high speed for 2-3 minutes until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Strain the Mixture

  • Place a cheesecloth, nut milk bag, or fine mesh strainer over a bowl.
  • Pour the blended coconut mixture into the strainer. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the liquid to drip through.
  • Gather the edges of the cheesecloth or use the nut milk bag and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

Step 4: Store Your Coconut Milk

  • Transfer the coconut milk into a clean jar or airtight container.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Shake well before use, as natural separation will occur.
