Crunchy, savory, and full of island flavor, Jamaican green banana chips are an iconic Caribbean snack. Discover how to make them at home with this simple recipe, plus tips for perfect crispness and delicious seasoning ideas!
Peel the green bananas ; be careful as green bananas tend to stain clothes and cutting boards (so wear gloves if you have and oil your cutting board, if you don’t have gloves, oil your hands). The flesh of the green banana is more likely to stick to its skin.
Slice the bananas as thin rounds or thin diagonal ovals, use a mandolin to get that perfect thinness. (Use the flat side of your grater if you don’t have a mandolin that’s what we used)
Add the banana to an ice bath. Soak for 10-15minutes.
Heat the oil, either in a deep sauté pan or fryer, ideal temperature for frying these is between 375 F -400 F, there should be enough oil to fully cover all the bananas.
Now its time to add the bananas to the hot oil; make sure to be careful not to overcrowd the pot this prevents them from sticking together.
Fry until the chips get a golden color, approximately 2-4 minutes
Remove the chips from the oil and drain on paper towels.
While still hot, sprinkle with salt or other seasonings.
