Best Authentic Jamaican Stew Peas Recipe-Smoked Turkey Neck
Jamaican Stew Peas is another classic dish that is definitely cooked very often in the Jamaican household. The traditional way to cook Jamaican Stew Peas is with a pigtail. But some other great substitutes for Stew Peas are oxtail or beef, smoked turkey neck, or no meat at all just peas (red kidney beans) for all my vegans out there.
What is Stew Peas made of?
Jamaican Stew Peas Recipe is a mouth-watering and perfectly delicious comfort food, that is made with red kidney beans, coconut milk, herbs, spices, and spinners (dumplings) with your choice of meat or just beans. Additional ingredients can include onion, garlic, mixed vegetables, and scallions. Funny enough despite its name this “stew peas” does not contain peas at all it’s just red kidney beans which are called red peas in Jamaica lol.
What meat is best for this dish?
We prefer to use smoked turkey in our Jamaican Stew Peas because it adds that smoky turkey flavor to your palate and it’s way healthier. But feel free to do what works for you. Spinners are essential to Jamaican stew peas; you cannot make stew peas without spinners. What are spinners? They are Yummy tiny Jamaican dumplings which help to thicken up your stew peas.
Stew Peas with Canned Kidney Beans
If you’re looking for a faster way to cook stew peas You can make it with canned kidney beans, We prefer dried beans, but you can use canned kidney beans instead. Drain the water from the beans and rinse thoroughly with water.

Jamaican Turkey Neck Stew Peas Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pack of Smoked Turkey necks
- 1 can of Coconut Milk
- 1 can of Red kidney beans or you can boil 1 1/2 cup of kidney beans from scratch
- 1/2 cup of onions
- 1/4 cup Raw peeled Ginger
- 1 tbsp of Green Seasoning
- 1 tbsp of Minced Garlic
- 1 whole Scotch Bonnet Pepper
- 1/4 cup scallion green onions
- 1 tsp of All Spice whole pimento
- 1 tsp of Thyme
- 1 tsp of Black Pepper
- 1 tsp of Salt
- 1 tsp of Red Pepper Flakes
- 1 tsp of Complete Seasoning
- 1 tsp of Adobo
- 1 ½ cup Flour
- 1 cup of Water
Instructions
- Add the turkey neck to the pot
- Add water until meat of fully covered.
- Boil the meat until it’s tender(we boiled ours for 30-45 mins)
- Throw off that water
- Chop the necks in half of the pieces are too big
- Add coconut milk to an empty pot
- Add Red kidney beans to the pot
- Now it’s time to season the pot
- Add the onions
- Add green seasoning
- Add the minced garlic
- Mix, Mix, Mix
- Add a whole scotch bonnet pepper
- Add your scallion (green onions)
- Add thyme
- Add Black Pepper
- Add Salt
- Add Red Pepper Flakes
- Add Complete Seasoning
- Add Adobo
- Mix, Mix,Mix
- Let it boil for 5 mins
- Add your turkey neck into the pot
- Add Ginger
- Mix , Mix,Mix
- Time to make spinners(dumplings)
Spinners Instructions
- Add 1 1/2 cup of flour to a bowl
- Add 1/2 cup of water (add more of less depending on the amount)
- Knead the dough
- Take pieces of the dough and rub your hands together to form little dumplings. Shape dough by rolling with your hands, as if you are making a log like sausage.
- Let it boil for 15 mins
- You are now ready to serve
