How do you eat Jamaican dumplings?
These dumplings, when made well, can be eaten on their own with some coco tea but it’s normally eaten with anything honestly. But here are a few options egg, plantain, corned beef, rum food, brown stew chicken, and jerk chicken.
Why is my fry dumpling tough?
Fried dumplings tend to get tough when not eaten right away. But I found that if you put an extra bit of butter in your flour it will stay soft. Also, deep frying traps moisture and keeps it soft. ( Deep frying does not give you too much of a hard shell)

Ingredients
- Flour – The whole base of the dish
- Baking Powder – Leavening agents make a fluffier dumpling for a more layered texture.
- Butter – Butter adds a rich flavor! However, you can substitute the butter for margarine or vegetable-based butter.
- Water – Binding agent for batter or you can use milk for an even softer dough.
- Sugar – Aids as a sweet kick to the recipe.
- Vegetable Oil – this is used for frying. You can use any kind of neutral cooking oil such as vegetable, avocado, or canola oil.

How To Make Jamaican Fried Dumplings
- To a bowl add flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, butter, and water. Knead it properly until you get a proper dough. ( The dough should be a bit sticky but not wet)
- Cover the dough for ½ an hour to 24 hours(take it out to thaw at room temp a few hours before frying). Heat the oil in a large Dutch pot and roll it into individual pieces.
- Place the shaped dough into the heated oil (make sure to test the oil with a piece of dough too. Make sure the oil is not too hot) and fry for about ten minutes (5mins on each side) or until golden brown.

Tips for Perfect Dumpling Every Time
- Don’t overwork the dough when kneading it. Stop kneading as soon as the ingredients are well combined. The dough should still be soft when you finish. It’s ok if the dough is a bit sticky but not wet.
- Make sure your oil is hot, but not too hot. Golden brown is the goal not burnt! Fry on medium-low heat, and ensure there are little sizzles of bubbles around each dumpling.
- Test fry one dumpling before frying a full batch to help determine if the oil is at the proper temperature. If it browns too quickly, the inside will be uncooked.
- Let the dough rest for at least 30 mins. You can even pop it in the fridge for 24 hours and let it thaw out the next day and get to room temperature before frying.
- The dough should be soft but not too sticky and wet (slightly sticky).
